Hi, I’m Anne Kerns and I’m a graphic designer. A print designer to be exact, and recently it seems I’ve had to specify. On one hand it’s good to be expert at one particular thing, on the other hand it can be limiting. But that’s going to change, and that’s the point of this blog. My friend, Jim, and I are going to learn web design. Follow along!
I am also a businesswoman (Anne Likes Red, Inc.) and an adjunct instructor (George Mason University) and I have an amazing family and two black cats.
You can see my print design work here, since I’ve been self-employed; and previous work from my 7-year stint at a local design firm is here. I have other earlier stuff, but it’s mostly buried in storage bins and not much worth looking at anyway.
Among other things, I Twitter and I’m LinkedIn. I am a member of AIGA, the professional association for design; The Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington; and Washington Book Publishers. I advocate professionalism, education, and integrity in design and design business.
If you know design terminology, you’ll also notice that by a curious twist of fate my name is also a typographic verb: Anne kerns; yes, she does.

Hello and welcome. I hope you enjoy this late bloomers’ journey into the world of web design. I’m Jim Darling and I am a long-time, in-house print graphic designer. Lately I’ve also felt that it was not just a good idea to add web designer to that title, but a necessity. And “better late than never” has never been a more appropriate creed. Currently I am a freelance designer who’s had the good fortune to pick up steady work since getting laid off from my full-time job last March. Either way, my thought is that learning the web can only make me more marketable. And maybe I’ll even get around to that portfolio site I’ve been meaning to start.
While I’m a designer on paper, I’m also a photographer by passion. I have a knack for portraiture, and am a contributor to The 100 Strangers Project on Flickr.com. It is my current obsession and chief motivator to stay creative. Follow along if you’d like… only 34 to go! And look around the rest of my page, there’s a lot more to discover.
As an active member of the DC design community, and former AIGA DC board member, you will see me out and about. From AIGA to ADCMW and the new DCDB. There is great design happening in our city and so many creative people to inspire you… so get out there!
And while Anne definitely kerns, I do my best at being darling. It’s not always as easy as it looks.
